Odd lights in the sky continue to be reported and documented, with investigators at the ready to help ID unidentified flying objects. Credit: MUFON
DENVER, Colorado – A strong core of believers continue to tout the notion of frequent alien visitors to Earth — UFOs — although this view is largely dismissed by skeptical, mainstream researchers.

But UFOlogists come in two flavors: Those who spend money to investigate the possibility, and those who simply aim to make money off the whole concept.

All this was discussed here last month at the 40th Annual International UFO Symposium, staged by the Mutual UFO Network, Inc., or MUFON, based in Fort Collins, Colorado. The symposium subtitle: "Dawn of a new era in UFO research."

A few lecture topics by noted speakers tell the story, from reflections of an old UFO chaser to dramatic changes in trace/landing events, as well as highlights from a 20-year study of Canadian sightings and even a talk on engaging a skeptic about UFOs.

Pseudoscientific

A long-time veteran of UFOlogy is Stanton Friedman, a nuclear physicist and lecturer on incoming ET traffic. And he is resolute.

"If one makes an appropriately objective and careful examination of the pro and anti-UFO arguments, one finds that the evidence is overwhelming that Earth is being visited by intelligently controlled vehicles of extraterrestrial origin and that only pseudoscientific arguments of a vocal but small group of debunkers stand in the way of reaching that conclusion, along with a fear of ridicule for being logical," Friedman explained.

Friedman's advice to UFO devotes: "Take courage. I have had only 11 hecklers at more than 700 lectures...and two of them were drunk."

Decades of UFO study are under the belt of Frank Salisbury, emeritus professor of plant physiology at Utah State University in Logan.

Given all that research, Salisbury's bottom line is that UFOs "are both real and important...whatever they are!" In the meantime, he added, don't discount a nearby parallel universe or a worm hole as ingredients in the saga.

Salisbury's sense is that there are intelligences behind the UFOs. And he served up a take-home message too.

"They want to be seen by a few of us, influencing us in some way unknown to us. So what are they trying to achieve with their displays? Darned if I know! For one thing, they might simply want to keep us confused. With me, they have succeeded."

Getting to the truth

As for what's hot in UFO research, James Carrion, MUFON International Director, said the organization has initiated a strategic relationship with Las Vegas-based hotel mogul and space module entrepreneur, Robert Bigelow.

In the works since April, Bigelow is footing the bill on operational expenses so MUFON investigators can pay attention to high priority cases, Carrion said, "and not go chasing lights in the sky."

Trained MUFON specialists can now be rapidly deployed, sent to sighting areas to gather data, even send physical evidence to a lab "while it's fresh, before other folks try to horde it," Carrion said. "In other words, really pay attention to what we should be paying attention to."

Carrion is frank regarding today's state of UFOlogy. He leaves no doubt that there are hucksters – not just, perhaps, aliens—among us.

"There are those of us in MUFON who want to solve the mystery. There are those other folks out there that want to perpetuate the mystery. There is this cottage industry out there. This is their employment and a way to make a buck," Carrion pointed out. "They have no desire to really get to the truth."

But for Carrion, the truth is out there.

"I think there's a core phenomenon. But we have to whittle away at it," Carrion told SPACE.com. One specific research track that he dubs "forensic history" is following the role of the U.S. Government in the UFO field.

"There's an indelible fingerprint out there that shows what the patterns of activity have been. It'll take some research," Carrion said. The Internet has proven to be a powerful tool, he said, enabling the gathering of UFO-related information instantaneously and to help corroborate items of interest.

"In my opinion, UFOlogists have only scratched the surface of potential research on the role of the Government in the UFO field, especially as it relates to counter-intelligence, code breaking, psychological warfare, and Cold War operations."

Evidentiary rules

Taking part in the MUFON meeting was Jeffrey Bennett, scientist and author of "Beyond UFOs - The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Its Astonishing Implications for Our Future."

Admittedly on the agenda as a "token skeptic," Bennett's view is that UFO advocates are best served by "assigning plausibility" to the conviction by hard core believers that Earth is on the receiving end of alien travelers.

"They think they've got evidence. But for me, it's not strong enough yet," Bennett told SPACE.com. One complaint he heard at the MUFON gathering was that mainstream scientists won't fund UFO research.

"But it's the way science works," Bennett counters. The kind of proof presented has not met the standards of scientific scrutiny, he added, "and if it ever does, they'll get their funding."

Others too dismissive?

For the most part, UFO activists are using a different set of evidentiary rules, Bennett said. "We've got our reasons why we like our set of rules in science, because it has been successful. It has allowed a lot of progress."

Bennett spotlights the technological level necessary to trek here from other stars. Then toss in the scale of the universe...the scale of time too. Views generated by "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" have invaded popular culture, so much so, that speeding through the cosmos appears to be a piece of cake.

"In fact, the technology is so incredible that it makes almost all the UFO claims look kind of silly," Bennett said. For instance, scooting across a humungous stretch of space and time to pile drive your craft into Roswell, New Mexico...that's more a stretch in plausibility, he observed.

All that being said, Bennett feels that sometimes the scientific community is far too dismissive of those that witness occurrences chalked up as UFOs.

"We can wish that everybody uses the same standards of evidence. But there's nothing wrong with them as human beings for not doing so. Leave them alone. Let them keep their interests up. Use that opportunity to educate them a little bit along the way...then that's good," Bennett concluded.

Whatever your UFO in-take is, be it a real deal belief, fantasy folk lore and/or a raw form of pulp fiction, one can't leave a MUFON convocation without bringing to mind a Bob Dylan lyric: "Something is happening here...but you don't know what it is."

Cammy: A New Canadian Lake Monster?

Move over, Sasquatch: Some say there's a new monster in Canada, living in a small lake on Vancouver Island.

John Kirk, co-founder of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, says his organization began cataloguing sighting reports of an odd creature in Cameron Lake about five years ago, when two people reported seeing a long black animal in the water.

"Witnesses have been describing what looks like a dark creature in the lake," Kirk said, adding that British Columbia has more reputed lake monsters than anywhere else in the world.

Kirk, who researches mysterious and unknown creatures, believes that the creature may be found, and spent one day aboard a boat searching the lake, courtesy of the local tourism board. Using a fish finder, Kirk's team found what he believes was a giant object amid a school of fish about 60 feet below the surface. Because the sonar picked up the object over the course of several passes, Kirk believes the anomalous reading was not simply a tight school of fish, which would have eventually dispersed.

Yet sonar images provided by fish finders are inherently ambiguous and give very little information. Unfortunately, the promise of better evidence vanished in the cold lake when the investigative team lost its underwater camera. Maybe a fastener was not properly tightened, or perhaps the lake monster had it for lunch. Whatever the reason, the search had to be called off.

While Cammy is Canada's newest monster, the most famous mystery serpent in the area is Caddy, the serpentine sea monster said to reside in Cadboro Bay, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. As with all such unknown animals, there is little consensus on what they might be: perhaps a known fish, a decidedly un-extinct dinosaur-like plesiosaur, or eyewitnesses' mistaken perceptions.

While the media entertain wild conjecture about the Lake Cameron monster, Kirk remains grounded, suggesting it is probably a known creature such as a giant eel or a large sturgeon. "I'm not going to the extent to say there's anything exotic down there," he says.

Indeed, the recent vintage of the Lake Cameron monster sightings argues against the existence of a large, unknown creature living there. Why, for example, would the first report only date back to 2004? Did the creature (or creatures) suddenly migrate into the lake from somewhere else that year? Or are people simply misinterpreting ordinary fauna?

One woman took a photograph of something odd in the lake back in 2007, describing it as having "a serpent shape" — but also looking like "a large fish." Was it, after all, a large fish?

It seems likely that she was correct, and did in fact see something strange in the water. But there's an illogical leap in assuming that "something strange" is necessarily an unknown lake monster.

In May of this year a swimming deer or moose was videotaped at Vermont's Lake Champlain, sparking speculation about Champ, the monster said to live there. Just as unknown creatures on land become Bigfoot, and unidentified objects in the sky become UFOs, mysterious objects and animals in the water become lake monsters.

Kirk and his team plan a return to Lake Cameron next year, when the lake may reveal its secrets — if indeed it harbors any.

This compilation includes many of my favorite NASA UFO encounters/sightings that I have archived over the years. All of these examples (with the exception of the second-to-last one) were captured on film by NASA astronauts or Russian Cosmonauts over the past half-century - showing many amazing examples from different eras - Gemini, Apollo, Apollo/Soyuz Test Project, Skylab, STS, the ISS, plus a couple Russian-source additions from their unmanned Zond and Mir Space Station programs as well thrown in to round things out.

The second last example is the only one in the compilation that features footage that was not taken in space and is not official-source (NASA or Soviet/Russian Space Agency). That clip shows an LTP (Lunar Transient Phenomenon) event captured through a camera connected to the eyepiece of a terrestrial-based telescope that luckily was being focused on the Moon at the time. In this case, the LTP manifests as an object transiting across the face of the lunar disc. Many thanks to amateur astronomer Alberto Mayer of Italy for doing a wonderful job of filming this stunning event (and for stacking the footage for us all to see).

While the examples you will see here captured on film can all be "officially" classified as "unidentified" objects, that absolutely does NOT mean that NASA, the DoD, and certain elements within the scientific community worldwide are completely in the dark as to what these things you are seeing are. Make no mistake: The Powers That Be are indeed aware of far more about our mysterious Universe than they are ever willing to admit to us. We, the plebeian masses of this planet, are being held in a state of enforced ignorance, deemed not worthy of knowing the full truth by those who are REALLY "running the show" down here on Earth. As this video shows over and over again however, there are indeed snippets of that amazing truth that have been left scattered about the official government archives over the decades, there for us to find so we may begin to educate ourselves about what is the most monumental coverup in human history - where the only thing more incredible than the lies is the truth!

To some it is a strange hybrid of coyote and hairless dog, to others it is merely a coyote with a severe case of mange. And yet others believe we may be seeing an entirely new creature, and that we are witnessing evolution in progress.

Whatever the consensus is, enough of these creatures have made news in recent years that if one shows up, it is a safe bet that it will be referred to as a Texas Chupacabras (as opposed to the much more alien-looking Puerto Rican Chupacabras).

19 September 2009. Four teenagers in Panama said, the creature was alive when they found it and it started coming after them, so they threw rocks and sticks at it and killing it.

It has an animal-like head, but a strange body with skinny, human like arms.

A group of children in Panama last weekend have killed a strange looking creature which they say crawled out of a cave.

Some are speculating that the ugly, hairless beast is some sort of extra terrestrial life form, others claim it is simply a shaven sloth. Which raises the question, who shaves a sloth?

The gang of youths in the town of Cerro Azul were playing by caves when they say the monster approached them and out of fear they beat it to death with rocks and sticks. The gang threw the dead creature into a stream and returned later to take photographs of its corpse.

The curved claws seem to indicate that it is a sloth that has lost all its hair.
